Hydrophilic Textiles: Body / Rainwater / Clothing was developed as a place-rooted inquiry into water, color, and care. The project approached rainwater not as a neutral material input, but as a collaborator, archive, and active agent in the production of color. Through rainwater-mediated natural dyeing, the work aimed to reduce the ecological footprint of textile coloration while reimagining clothing as an interface between the body, atmosphere, and environment.
Rainwater was collected from different regions and time periods, and each sample was analyzed for its specific chemical properties. These variations informed plant-based dye baths, allowing color to function as a local index of environmental conditions. Shifts in acidity, alkalinity, and environmental load produced subtle changes in color and texture, imprinting atmospheric differences onto fabric. The project then extended this sensitivity from place to body through hydrophilic textiles dyed with local plants and collected rainwater.
The final prototypes included garments with transparent reservoirs and IV tubing systems, enabling the on-body collection, circulation, and visibility of water. In this way, clothing became an interpretive interface that made environmental relations perceptible both physically and visually. By treating rainwater as a co-production medium, the project challenged conventional understandings of dyeing and positioned color as something produced in relation to the bioregion.
